First thing, bright and early, I viewed a panorama, sunlit Venice from my hostel's rooftop. Marvelous:
Just as good and tall as that bell tower in San Marco (green roof, center right), only free!! |
You would never guess this is a street. The magical tunnel-alley to breakfast at a bakery! |
Pasta of all colors! |
Delicious pastry filled with ricotta cheese and spinach, called a Tortella. |
Amran, who showed me the bakery frequented by locals, fed some pigeons some of his pastry. |
Then, scouted out the Libreria Acqua Alte. See for yourself:
Next mission: wander the streets, and get lost in the magic of Venice:
Quite possibly the most narrow of all streets. |
Found you, Vivaldi. |
And that was all by 10am. Then, I went island hopping via the vaporetto:
Main island. |
Welcome to Murano. We have glass. Lots of stunning glass. |
The guy on the right chatted with me in Italian, bringing me fresh made glass samples. |
Recently completed. |
Welcome to Burano. We have the most colorful of all houses. |
Each fishman's family name has a unique house color assigned, hence the rainbow! |
I said I'd have some sort of fish on Burano; first time I had anchovies. |
Welcome to Troncello, the garden island. |
We've got a cathedral, too. |
Back on the main island, I visited a late-Romanesque church I'd been meaning to see:
Santa Maria della Salud. |
Stunning Titian altar piece. |
Then, I wandered some streets toward the hostel... getting mildly lost, but my way was righted with helpful directions from a man who only spoke Italian (pointing and maps do wonders!)
Totally exhausted, I enjoyed a peaceful dinner:
Mussels, with a strange kind of Italian bread with a texture like marzipan. Candy bread? |
