It's Vatican time. But first, Santa Maria della Popolo!
Walked by this unassuming church a couple times before I found it. |
Such marble variety! |
Every Baroque church needs a dome. |
Hey, Caravaggio. Stunning. |
Thank goodness I reserved my Vatican tickets online, because the line stretched around 3 of the 4 sides of the enclosure. It took almost 15 minutes just walking past the line! I was greeted by a Roman collection as far as the eye can see:
Lovely floor mosaics! |
Ceiling to the hall of maps. Whoa. |
Detail of ceiling. |
One of many, many maps, depicting ALL the known parts of Italy at the time. |
Hey, I know that one! |
Just some table I found. |
Even the shutters are gorgeous! |
Raphael's famous Athens School, which depicts Leonardo and Michelangelo as philosophers, center. |
That's some Manneristic Rennaissance behind you. Better known as the wall of the Sistine Chapel. |
Toured the collection of Pope carriages, too! |
The famous vehicle of Pope John Paul II's attempted assassination. |
Late Gothic stained glass... or perhaps Neo-gothic? |
Exit ramp. |
Later, visited St. Peter's:
I'm gonna see the Pope! Asked these Swiss guards for an official pass. |
