Vienna, Day 13: Rathaus Ice Skating

Samtag, 26 Jänner

Today was quite an adventure indeed. Things started out as planned, with a lovely visit to the weekly Naschmarkt extravaganza. I searched and searched for a pair of opera goggles, but the only working pair I found were 50 Euros. Das is zu teuer!

OF COURSE they have a Chandelier vendor in Vienna.
Then, some of my roommates and I went ice skating in from of the beautiful Rathaus, or Town Hall. It's a Viennese tradition that every January the city builds a large interconnecting rink in between the Rathaus and the Hofberg Theater for an event called Eistraum, or "ice dream."

The rest of the day turned out to be quite an adventure. I first tried to attend Puccini's opera La Boheme at the Kammeroper (Chamber Opera), and as the name implies, the place is tiny. We searched and searched and eventually found it hidden in a narrow alleyway we had overlooked. When my friend and I arrived, there was only 1 seat left (no standing room here!), so we decided to go another night. In compensation, I was determined to find a cozy cafe. After all, it's a Saturday night; people are out, and Sundays EVERYTHING is closed. So I hunted down this place called Beim Czaak:

When I finally found it, it was a perfectly cozy hide away--that was unfortunately rented out for a private party for the night. I proceeded to search for an infamous "Cat Cafe," that has several resident cats. Could not find it. BUT I did come across this adorable place:

I had remembered seeing it in one of my Vienna guide books, and as the name implies, it was tiny, and most certaintly cozy! It's even housed in a charming square:

They were out of desserts, but I ordered some lovely herbal tea and read the local newspaper.

As I sat, I felt determined to talk to a real, live Austrian, even if it had to be in English. So I spoke to a distinguished looking gentleman, who turned out to be named Richard and who had grown up in Vienna right around the corner from the cafe! He graciously ordered me my first mulled wine (Glühwine) and we had a long, charming conversation (his glass to the upper left).
