Vienna, Day 10: KonzertHaus

Mittwoch, 23 Jänner

Today was quite an adventure. Started off with our German class deciphering directions to a mystery coffee house, which turned out to be a green house, complete with tropical blue butterflies:

Classmate Anna enters PaumenHaus Cafe.

I had my first "Melange," a Viennese coffee with milk, topped with foam. I normally can't tolerate coffee, but with the glass of Wasser they provide, my Magen (stomach) was content. I also tried three kinds of kuken (cake): Apfelstrudel, the famous Sacertorte, and the Palmenhaustorte. The Sacertorte (top left) was absolutely delectable, with apricot jam lurking in the layers.

Later, I attended a konzert by the Weiner Symphoniker at the KonzertHaus. An awing performance beyond words, complete with chills, with a program of Mahler's Kindertotenlieder and Strauss' Alpine Symphony. Getting a rush ticket was total chaos, but totally worth this:

I was so close to the singer he could have spat on me if he wanted to! (I was second row).

Gotta have a chandelier.
Beats the konzert I almost attended by accident (went to the wrong hall!):

Luckily, a kind gentleman to my left confirmed my suspicion this hall was not fit for a Mahler-sized orchestra.

On another note, I tried a Persimmon today. Texture of a cantalope, tastes vaguely like a mango. Charming:
