Germany Tour, Day 2: Dresden

Sonntag, 3 February

Exciting day today, filled with lots of touring Dresden, many churches, and a lot of stories about Augustus the Strong:
Hello Altstadt (Old City) Dresden!

Part of Augustus the Strong's Summer Palace.

More palace.

Augustus the Strong's gondola, inspired by a visit to Venice. He rode it on the river Elbe in Dresden, which runs next to his palace.

A building where Shakespeare was read.

A tree planted in the stump of a 200 year old tree's stump, in the English Garden part of the Summer Palace.
Railroad station.

My favorite place, however, was the world's most beautiful milk-shop, covered from floor to ceiling with porcelain (including solid porcelain pillars). I quite possibly tried the best milk in the world there. It was so rich, creamy and sweet, I thought I was trying coconut milk!

For lunch, we ate in a renovated underground cellar, and I felt like I was dining with medieval dwarfs.

Somewhat monochromatic, but delicious (and filling!) meal of beets, beef, raisins, with a large dumpling (complete with a surprise plum in the middle).

Dessert. A cream-filled pancake-pastry, with apple sauce. Delectable.

Later, we visited the Green Vault, which contains spectacular royal treasures from throughout the years, including the world's largest green diamond and a large sapphire shaped like a nose. No photos allowed, but here's the building!

Finally, we wandered around lit-up monuments and cathedrals:

At 6pm, this church's bells tolled, creating a most full, resounding, magical effect, combined with ghostly white light of the stone.

Famous Mr. Augustus the Strong.

The Procession of the Princes, by night.
